Safety Tips for Motorcycle Riders

|

Georgia residents who love to ride motorcycles may enjoy taking advantage of beautiful spring, summer and fall weather. Many enjoy taking long road trips or just riding around their neighborhood. However, riding motorcycles can be dangerous, especially because there are motorists who are not up-to-date on motorcycle safety. As such, motorcyclists should follow practices that keep themselves safe.

Appropriate clothing is always a plus when it comes to riding motorcycles. While leather jackets and clothing has always been associated with biker culture, it actually can be very protective should an accident occur. Leather is an excellent insulator against the wind and provides protection against cuts and scrapes. Additionally, full-faced helmets may appear to reduce visibility. However, the Department of Transportation requires that all helmets have a field view of at least 210 degrees. They also keep the wind and bugs out.

One of the biggest myths when it comes to motorcycles is that other motorists will see the motorcycle. However, motorcycles are smaller than other vehicles, making them easier to miss. Motorists are also not necessarily trained to look out for motorcyclists, putting them at risk for becoming involved in motorcycle crashes.

A motorcyclist who is in a collision with another vehicle is at serious risk for a brain injury, broken bones or damage to internal organs. If the accident was caused by the driver of the other vehicle being distracted, impaired or otherwise negligent, a personal injury attorney might be of assistance to the victim by filing a lawsuit seeking compensation for the costs of the required medical treatment and other losses.
